The NRL South Australia has developed the Telstra Store West Lakes High Performance Program which includes a Rams Junior Development Academy (for ages 9 to 17 years) and a High Performance Athlete Program. This program has seen a partnership with NRL club Manly Warringah Sea Eagles and Adelaide boy Brenton Lawrence who is an ambassador for the Junior Development Program.
The program and relationship with the Sea Eagles, has led to young Rugby League players participating in off-season strength and conditioning programs, skill development sessions, education programs that included information relating to Drugs and Alcohol in sport, Hydration and Sports Nutrition for the Rugby League Player, Sport Psychology, Psychological preparation. The program will continue to develop and provide a clear Junior Pathway Program and players the opportunity to play and train alongside NRL clubs.
A Women’s Junior Development Program (for ages 11-18 years) has also been developed with an experienced coach and a pathways program.
In Season 2014, this occurred for Eels Rugby League Club Junior Tylor Black who was the first recipient of this opportunity after his successful 2013 Season and selection in to the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League Under 15’s Merit Team. In mid-January 2014, Tylor Black took part in a training program with Manly Warringah Sea Eagles Junior and Senior Squads, and participated in two trial games. From all reports, he had a very successful and enjoyable experience. NRL SA look to offer this opportunity to more South Australian junior players.
